2. General information:

The Lieksa-Nurmes airfield had a 940-meter-long and 18-meter-wide runway with both asphalt and gravel surfaces. Next to the airfield, there was a freely accessible lean-to shelter built by the Viekijärvi hunting club, which also provided firewood and a toilet. A couple of kilometers away, the hunting club’s cabin offered sauna and overnight stay opportunities. There was no fuel station.

In August 2021, the cities of Lieksa and Nurmes placed Vieki airfield’s owning company, Lieksa-Nurmeksen Lentokenttä Oy, into liquidation. The cities had jointly managed the airfield’s maintenance through the company they owned. However, the airfield’s usage had been minimal, and increasing its use would have required significant investments, such as building an aircraft hangar and extending the runway.

In June 2022, the company managing the airfield, Lieksa-Nurmeksen Lentokenttä Oy, was dissolved, and the airfield was closed. The land is planned to be repurposed for energy production.

In 2023, the city of Lieksa purchased the airfield land for itself.
